Jewish Bereavement Support Groups and Other Services

The Shira Ruskay Center, www.shiraruskay.org of The Jewish Board of Family and Children’s Services offers 8 session groups individually formed to allow participants an experience of being with others facing a similar loss. Receive support, psychological insight, and practical coping strategies in groups that draw upon shared experiences as well as Jewish traditions. Continuously forming groups for the loss of a parent or a spouse/partner are co-facilitated by a Rabbi and Social Worker. New York Jewish Healing Center, www.jcprograms.org/nyjhc, of The Jewish Board of Family and Children's Services, offers on-going group meetings once or twice a month, co-led by a rabbi and a mental health professional for adults who have lost an adult child or a young child. The groups provide interpersonal support, psychological insight and practical coping strategies, drawing on Jewish stories, songs, poetry and prayer for guidance, comfort and strength. M'Kom Shalom: A Place for Peace
For Jewish survivors of a close ones' suicide, a monthly meeting on the second Wednesday of the month. To confirm group meeting and details call Rabbi Simkha Y. Support for Bereaved Children
Through its Loss and Bereavement Program for Children, The Jewish Board of Family and Children's Services offers programs designed to help children cope with the loss of a parent or caregiver. Contact Randi Anderson at 212-632-4692.

Widowed Persons Service (WPS)
A bereavement program for adults of all ages who have recently lost a spouse or partner is a program of New York Service Program for Older People, Inc. (SPOP). Our trained, widowed volunteers provide individual peer counseling and time-limited bereavement support groups. We also provide information on bereavement, as well as referrals to other programs in the New York area. There is NO FEE for our services.
