Plaza Jewish Community Chapel Announces Three-year Partnership With Shomer Collective

Funding Partnership will Support and Grow the Shomer Collective’s What Matters Program

New York – May 23, 2023 – Plaza Jewish Community Chapel (PJCC) today announced a three-year partnership with Shomer Collective to support its What Matters: Caring Conversations About End of Life program.

The partnership includes a grant that will support the operation and growth of What Matters, a program that enables individuals to engage in advance care planning within the framework of Jewish wisdom. The program is taking place in synagogues, rabbinical seminaries and other Jewish communal organizations and structures.

“As a community-based not-for-profit, Plaza is strongly committed to elevating end-of-life conversations in New York and beyond. This partnership will help provide the organization and structure for creating those conversations in the Jewish community,” said Ethan Horwitz, Chair of the PJCC Board of Directors.

“Plaza’s initial grant helped create the What Matters program and this latest grant by Plaza, our fourth, supports a proven and invaluable resource for the Jewish community around a critical life cycle event. Our funding partnership will allow Shomer Collective to reach more broadly and deeply into the Jewish community with this important initiative.”

What Matters is considered the first large-scale advance care planning offering in the Jewish community in the United States. It was launched in 2015 as a collaboration between the Marlene Meyerson JCC Manhattan, The New Jewish Home and the Jewish Theological Seminary, and was made possible with founding funding by PJCC with additional support from UJA-Federation of New York.

Shomer Collective acquired What Matters in 2022 with the intention of scaling it nationally. The organization works to improve end-of-life experiences for individuals and their families — inspired by Jewish knowledge, values and practices — by curating content and resources and building a diverse network of organizational partners.

“We are grateful for the partnership and support of Plaza Jewish Community Chapel in bringing What Matters to an expanded audience through Shomer Collective,” said Rabbi Melanie Levav, Founding Executive Director of Shomer Collective.

“The multi-year investment will allow us to work closely together to help more people in New York and beyond to benefit from important conversations about life and death, infused with Jewish wisdom.”

The granting partnership between PJCC and Shomer Collective will be the subject of a Facebook Live event at noon ET on Thursday, June 1, under the auspices of Exit Strategy, the podcast of PJCC. For more information, visit https://www.facebook.com/plazajewishcommunitychapel.
