Plaza Jewish Community Chapel is First Funeral Chapel in NYC to Receive SAGECare Credential

New York – August 23, 2023 – Plaza Jewish Community Chapel (PJCC) is the first funeral chapel in New York City to receive a credential from SAGE, the country’s largest and oldest organization dedicated to improving the lives of LGBTQ+ older people and advocating for their interests.

A SAGECare credential represents that an organization’s staff and leadership has taken part in SAGE’s comprehensive competency training to provide services to LGBTQ+ older adults and their families.

“The word ‘community’ is prominent in Plaza’s name by purpose,” said Ethan Horwitz, Chair of PJCC’s Executive Committee. “We serve all segments of the diverse mosaic that is the Jewish community. Just as any other communal organization, we have the responsibility to be mindful of the sensitivities and interests attached to all — including LGBTQ+ individuals and their families.”

SAGE’s credentialed training programs provide an overview of the needs, concerns and unique history of LGBTQ+ older adults, and address proactive steps that organizations can take to improve the quality of services they provide. Trainings are structured around real life stories to create relatable experiences to educate employees and leadership.

“We are proud to have earned this SAGECare credential,” said Gregory Katz-Zannitto, PJCC Senior Funeral Director and Director of Communal Partnerships. “We are leading the end-of-life sector in respecting to the greatest extent possible the communities that we serve at the most vulnerable of times.”

Plaza Jewish Community Chapel, established in 2001, is a not-for-profit service founded and operated by the Jewish community.
